The Childersburg community is mourning Tanner Bowen, a beloved son and brother whose life was profoundly changed by a devastating automobile accident in June 2022 and who spent the years that followed under the devoted care of his family.
Tanner was 19 when the crash occurred on June 25, 2022. He and his younger brother, 17-year-old Preston Bowen, were traveling in a 2005 Dodge Ram on Coleman Bridge Road near Childersburg when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Preston was pronounced dead at the scene, while Tanner was transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham with critical injuries.
The crash forever changed the Bowen family. Tanner had only recently returned home from Army camp in Washington state, making his return to his family an especially poignant memory in the aftermath of the tragedy. His parents, Robert and Melissa Bowen, were suddenly faced with the devastating loss of one son while praying for the survival of another.
Tanner suffered a severe brain injury along with numerous other injuries, including a broken neck, broken clavicle, broken scapula, three broken ribs and a broken leg. He also underwent surgery involving part of his liver and endured extensive medical treatment.
After months at UAB Hospital, Tanner was transferred to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta for rehabilitation. His family remained at his side throughout the difficult process, caring for him and holding onto hope for his recovery.
By late 2022, Tanner had returned home to Childersburg with his parents. His condition remained extremely serious, and he was largely unresponsive. His family learned to navigate the challenges of caring for him while continuing to cherish every day they had together. Shortly after returning home, Tanner experienced seizures and was taken back to UAB for additional medical care.
Through the years that followed, Robert and Melissa continued to stand beside their son. Their commitment to Tanner became a defining part of the family’s journey, as they provided constant care while refusing to give up hope.
The Bowen family also continued to share Tanner’s story. In 2024, on the second anniversary of the crash, his father reflected on how dramatically the tragedy had changed their lives and encouraged others to appreciate the time they have with their loved ones rather than taking those moments for granted.
