A woman was shot by Port Orange police Thursday morning, September 3, 2026, after she allegedly opened fire inside the lobby of the Port Orange Police Department, authorities said.
The incident unfolded at approximately 8:30 a.m. at the department’s headquarters on South Clyde Morris Boulevard. According to Police Chief Manuel Marino, a woman believed to be about 70 years old entered the main lobby, where the department’s civilian records staff work, and confronted employees while carrying a handgun.
Marino said the woman brandished the firearm and fired a shot inside the lobby in the direction of civilian employees. No civilian staff members were injured in the gunfire.
After the shooting, the woman left the building and was confronted by responding officers. Police said she was still holding the firearm when officers encountered her, resulting in an officer-involved shooting. Three officers were involved, according to the police chief. None of the officers was injured.
The woman was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Authorities have not released her name or provided an update on her condition, pending notification of next of kin. A motive for the incident has not been determined.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the officer-involved shooting, while Port Orange police continue to provide information about the initial incident.
